Mr. Kavounas is the co-founder of Rockwood Capital, which he led as Chairman and CEO for 20 years. Prior to Rockwood, Mr. Kavounas was a Director and Executive Vice President of Competrol Real Estate Limited and Partner and Co-Founder of Sullivan Smith & Kavounas from 1980 to 1995, advisors to high net worth global investors. From 1973 to 1980, Mr. Kavounas was General Counsel and Executive Vice President of Mobil Land Development Corporation (MLDC), Mobil Corporation’s large scale land development subsidiary. Overall, Mr. Kavounas has 40 years of experience in real estate investment and development of office, technology, apartment and hotel properties in key U.S markets, on behalf of over 150 institutional and private investors.
Mr. Kavounas graduated from Cornell University with a B.A. in History and from Fordham Law School with a J.D. He went to Forest Hills High School in New York City
Mr. Kavounas has over 13 years in the real estate financial services, technology, and compliance industries. Mr. Kavounas has worked for two federal banking agencies, two AmLaw Top 25 Law Firms and three startups. He advises entities on fund formation and structure, creates business and compliance strategies to maximize profit and leads due diligence efforts of portfolios in real estate and technology. He has authored some legal publications, and is a frequent speaker at real estate, cloud computing and FinTECH industry events. Additionally, Mr. Kavounas has invested in twelve startups in the “disruptive technologies” industry through his own investment fund.
Mr. Kavounas double majored in Communications and Managerial Economics at the University of California, Davis. He earned his Juris Doctor from Indiana University School of Law. Mr. Kavounas completed his LL.M. in Securities Law and Policy at the American University's Washington College of Law. He is a registered lobbyist and is an active member of the bar in the District of Columbia.
